Apocalypse Now!
Sunday, 5 October 2003 by Jacob TomawThe Cubs have won a postseason series for the first time in 95 years! 95 Years, not since wining the 1908 World Series. In 1908 Theodore Roosevelt was President. The population of the United States was 88 million; there are 200 million more people now. There were 46 states. Arizona and New Mexico became states the last time the Cubs were in the World Series in 1912, so this could also be the year for Puerto Rico. In 1908 the Federal budget was only $660 million. A lot more has changed since then, but the point is ?Holy Crap the Cubs beat the Braves!!!? We are now going fishing for Marlin.
I know that many Cub fans have someone special who they know this would mean a lot to if they were still alive. Grandpa Tomaw is that person for me. The way I best remember him is laying on the floor in his living room watching the Cubs announced by Harry Carey and Steve Stone on WGN Channel 9. I also remember listening to the games on the radio if we were in the car. I do not remember him cheering or talking about the games with his friends, but I know that he was as big of a fan as you could find anywhere. This year is Deward Tomaw?s year.
Update: Just remembered I am an idiot. The Cubs were in the 1906, 1907, 1908, 1910, 1918, 1929, 1932, 1935, 1938, and 1945 World Series. Meaning the Cubs were not in the 1912 Fall Classic and it definitely was not the last time they were there. So maybe Puerto Ricans will remain second class Americans. Sorry.
