Congressman Hostettler apologizes for carrying gun in Louisville Airport

Wednesday, 11 August 2004 Jacob Tomaw

Congressman Hostettler, whose district includes Vermillion County and part of Fountain County, will receive a suspended sentence as long as he follows the terms of the plea agreement. Part of this agreement is he can only purchase a gun in Indiana and Washington. Last I knew, no one could own a gun in Washington.

This is why Illinois is the second greatest state in the Union.

Jewish tourists attacked by French tourist

Monday, 9 August 2004 Jacob Tomaw

The Frenchmen were angry because the Jews had an Israeli flag with them.

The resident scholar of the Jewish group said, “This was another reminder that in Western Europe there is sympathy for dead Jews; it’s just the live ones that they cannot tolerate.”

Team USA lost a basketball game to Italy

Wednesday, 4 August 2004 Jacob Tomaw

Italy beat out NBA stars 95-78! The coach of the team, Larry Brown, said, “It’s a young team, and it’s a different game internationally.” Definitely a different game internationally. It turns out everyone outside of the NBA actually plays the game of basketball, not street ball.

A Vivid Reddish Orange

Tuesday, 3 August 2004 Jacob Tomaw

I check the Vermillion County news link about every morning. From time to time there are false positives in the wire. These are stories with Vermillion County in the story, but the story is actually about Vermilion County Illinois. I am sure the people in Danville or Georgetown do not see what the big deal is, but I am sure their Hoosier counterparts do.

Today there is one of these storied. WTHI, Channel 10, in Terre Haute reported about democrats watching the DNC in Danville. They were referred to as “Vermillion County, Illinois Democrats.” Tow things were wrong there. First there is no place known as Vermillion County, Illinois. Second, we all know that the Terre Haute TV stations are afraid to cross the Wabash and report on Vermillion County, Indiana.

So, being the pain in the butt that I am (which I learned from my mother), I wrote to WTHI. I did not expect a response. However I received one and they have fixed the error! Read the corrected story here.

National Sales Tax

Tuesday, 3 August 2004 Jacob Tomaw

Matt Drudge reported this week that Speaker Hastert is going to promote real tax reform in the next Congress. He wants to eliminate the IRS and income tax. It would be replaces with some type of tax on consumption. I think it should be a national sales tax. Maybe they could eliminate Medicare and Social Security from the payroll taxes while they are at it.

Some of the complaints I have heard about this plan in the past are addressed by Neal Boortz today.
