These are the ramblings of a young married couple in the great City of Chicago.

Cap the Ike!

Thursday, 4 August 2005 by Jacob Tomaw

I was going through the projects being funded by the federal government in this year?s transportation funding bill. One of those projects is Cap the Ike. This project is getting $4M for construction.

Oak Park wants to build a park on top of the Ike! This is not like the Big Dig where the interstate was buried in Boston. The Ike is already below grade, with 20ft retaining walls on each side. Building these parks would make the Ike a tunnel though Oak Park and allow Oak Park to reconnect some of their roads and neighborhoods.

This might become a big boondoggle. If it does not, I would like to see this done more. The Ike was built through populated parts of the city, separating neighbors. Projects like this will stitch cities back together.
