This would never be my mom!

Monday, 26 June 2006 Jacob Tomaw

This guy talks about who you really can negotiate with the companies you do business with. He uses the example of getting 50% off his mom’s cable bill. This is really good advice. And he points out that “15 minutes earned [him] the same amount that $4,500 in a 5% account would have earned in a full year.”

I want to try this out, but of course my mom would have got the cable company to pay her for the service. You might think that sounds great, until you realize we are always seated next to the kitchen at resurants. There is economic karma out there.

Lots of Photos

Thursday, 22 June 2006 Jacob Tomaw

I have added the pictures from Chris and Kat’s wedding I promised. I have also added several other sets, including this very large one of miscellaneous pictures I could not really sort into their own groups. Take a look through and if you think some should be elevated to their own group let me know.

Sexy Cat!

Wednesday, 21 June 2006 Jacob Tomaw

I have uploaded some recent pictures.

First are some from Jos and I at Pritzker Pavilion last week trying to see the Joffrey Ballet for free. They are in the set Summer 2006 In The City. I hope to keep this set growing as the summer goes on.

I have also added pics to the First Home set. These are of the inside of Ainsle. My favorite is this glamour shot that George posed for on the counter. He is not supposed to be on the counter. Schlechte Katze! (Ja, Er spricht Deutsch.)

Top Ten Stock Photography Cliches

Wednesday, 21 June 2006 Jacob Tomaw

This post was on the in-house Orbitz design forum. I think I have seen a variation of all of these at the companies I have worked for, and I am sure you have too. The forum even pointed out that we use #2 “The Flirty Customer Service Gal”

Congrats to Chris and Kat

Saturday Jos and I went to Southern Indiana to attend the wedding of a couple of our old friends and former floormates from IU. It was an outside wedding near a lake at a retreat/conference area in Henryville, IN. It was a little hot, but the ceremony was only 15 min long. The receptions was nice. Good food, nice music, and a great time to catch up with some friends we had not seen in 4 or 5 years.

Chris and Kat currently live in NYC while Chris attends Fordham, pursuing his PhD in History. Kat is running your own business called Imagine: Health & Wellness. They are enjoying New York, but I think their plan is to move back to Indiana.

There were two interesting instances of how small the world can be at the reception. First, the bar tender was a woman named Jes who we are acquainted with through Nina and David Alcorn, who were also there along with Mel and Zach). Also, my friend Ryan Amtmann teaches at the high school my friend Ryan McHale graduated from in Derry, NH.

I took some pictures, I will have them posted in the next couple of days.

Update: I have added the pictures from Chris and Kat’s wedding I promised. I just noticed I did not get any of the bride or groom.

Just Work and Go

Thursday, 15 June 2006 Jacob Tomaw

Work at Orbitz is going well. So far it seems like a great place to work. Great people, equipment, and systems.

My team is just as smart as they seemed in the interview. I also noticed they are taller than most of the teams I have been on in the past. A woman just started on my team today, so I now have a learning buddy. I think we are mostly going to work it like we have two mentors so we will get most of the walkthroughs twice and maybe pick up on the different nuances of how different people do the work. I had a meeting with my boss (or boss’ boss) about who things work on the team and what he expects of me. It all seems reasonable to me. I need to get up to speed as soon as possible because they only bring people onto the team who are going to play valuable roles and have respectable opinions.

I have the best tools to work. These are much better than anything I have ever had. First, Orbitz has standard issue ThinkPads for everone. Not top of the line, but pretty close. I have a T43.
