Not smart enough for this movie

Saturday, 1 December 2007 by Joscelynn Tomaw

We’ve seen some quirky movies in our day, but if any of you see Margot at the Wedding and actually “get it”, please let us in on the secret. We thought we’d go out to the movies since it could be years before we have our next opportunity. I really wish we hadn’t squandered our date on this navel gazing, uncomfortable piece of poo. If Peter Travers’ review is to be believed, I guess we’re just not sophisticated enough to discern the beauty in the way Noah Baumbach develops his characters. I probably didn’t notice because I was busy plucking my eyebrows with my fingers in an effort to stop trying to pinpoint exactly why I have trouble looking at Zane Pais’ face.

If I had to find one redeeming aspect of this movie, I would say that somehow set against the sick and depressing remainder of the cast, Jack Black’s comedic relief is a god send.

But don’t let me sway you! By all means, judge for yourselves!

You’re in good company - on Rotten Tomatoes, the reviews are evenly split between this movie being a masterpiece, and being the most obnoxious thing they’ve ever seen.

    A “good” review:
“…a smart and honestly ugly film, with well-toned dialogue and an acute understanding of neurotic compulsion… a minor piece of work…”
    Chris Barsanti

    And bad:
“I’ve had root canals that were more enjoyable than Margot at the Wedding, Noah Baumbach’s hugely pretentious, ugly and annoying follow-up to The Squid and the Whale.”
    Lou Lumenick
    New York Post

    I think I’ll give this a pass!
