These are the ramblings of a young married couple in the great City of Chicago.

Jonah is Home

Friday, 7 December 2007 by Jacob Tomaw

Everyone came home yesterday. Jos and Jonah got a clean bill of health from their doctors. We are still getting down to a routine.

The first feeding after we returned home, Jos’ milk came in. So it turns out she really is a mammal. We got several formula bottles from the hospital, but we have not had to use any of them. I think Jonah is still learning what to do with all that milk. His feedings are coming a little more often than his doctor was recommending. He seems to be hungry ever 2 hours and the doc recommended every 3. I am sure he will get more efficient as the time goes on.

I can already see him learning things. He has started to enjoy sucking his hand, which he has a smidge more control over. It is amazing that we have to learn the sense of physical self and the bounds of our bodies.

What breaks my heart about him? His little hiccups. They seem to control his whole body and he gets the a lot. A little sucking seems to make them go away.

We are learning a lot too and our instincts are really kicking in. We cannot identify every cry right away, but our arsenal of things to try are getting refined. The latest weapon to add is the pacifier. BTW, when did pacifiers change into this complicated shape with a top and bottom? I sucked on it and it is a nice fit with a place for you tongue, but I remember them always just being round. Who would have thought the pacifier would evolve.

Aunt Dana and Uncle Kris are coming tonight. I hope they are ready to be up in the night. Last night was really not that bad, but I am sure some hard nights are coming.
