Feeds are the future

Monday, 14 January 2008 by Jacob Tomaw

Over the holiday, RSS feeds came up while talking with some family. The conversation ended with someone who is a creative engineer saying RSS feeds are not as great as everyone talks about.

I really don’t know what he was talking about. RSS feeds have changed my life and made me more productive, if you can be more productive are being a nerd. If you are looking for more ways to get more out of the internet through feeds, look here.

If you don’t know what I am talking about, check out that link and check out Reader.

If you are already a believer, what are your favorite feeds?

I am an advocate of feeds (although i’ve been using igoogle instead of reader… although you’d think you could use either..). However, I can empathize with people in the tech community who don’t think they are a big deal. We’ve heard the hype that XML (and then RSS) was going to save the world since the mid 90’s (if not before). We were promised that XML would bring world peace, end the drug war…etc etc. Turns out it just helps with communication…

If I have to list a fav feed, I’d say any of the channels on slashdot.org

I’m with you. I’m trying to get my wife using Google Reader instead of all that messy surfing she does. Here’s my attempt to convert her: http://blog.crisatunity.com/2008/01/reader-smashes-surfing.html

I have tried to get a few of my friends to use feed readers but so far my attempts have been futile. The problem is people are very resistant to change, especially if they have been doing it (surfing) one way for most of their lives.

Let me get this straight…. “XML is a giant step in no direction at all” but RSS will change the world? Something is fishy here.

XML as a vague data defining language is hardly ever better than some other simpler format.

It is true that RSS is XML. However, my greater point is about feeds. If these were JSON strings or YAML, it would be fine with me. RSS is probably the least innocuous form of XML because so many people have fone the hard work on it and you can just use a library.

For real fun with XML look at SOAP. After a day in that hell, you are begging for some kind of RPC.
