Why McCain?

Thursday, 7 February 2008 by Jacob Tomaw

Why do people support John Sidney McCain, III? Please post an answer in the comments section. It can be why you support John McCain or why you think other people do.

I am having a hard time coming up with an answer that does not sound like I am denigrating people. However, my mom pointed out that I supported McCain for a time in 2000. I was drawn in by his “Straight Talk.” This does not appear to be as much of a factor in this election.

Unfortunately I think a lot of McCain’s support is simply “I’m a Republican so that’s it”. Personally I’m having a hard time finding him to be the conservative I’d like in a president as well as someone who has a clear plan for the future of the US. Maybe he just comes off like he’s going to continue in the same path because it’s worked before. I’m afraid our economy needs more support than that.
As for my vote…….I am a Republican BUT!

I usually vote Democrat, but I know that in 2000, I was attracted to John McCain’s sense of character and personality. I’ve paid less attention to the Republican side of things for this cycle (my excuse: being on the wrong side of the world), but he still seems to deserve points for character–in the past 8 years, he’s put out a bill for campaign finance reform, spoken out against torture, and stood his ground (whether you like it or not) on how to run the war in Iraq.

My sense is that McCain can beat Hillary Clinton more easily than Barack Obama, in large part because of the question of character (not to mention that he can beat her on claims of experience with one hand tied behind his back).

I have yet to decide if that’s a good thing or not; I still need to look in on where McCain stands on things today.
