These are the ramblings of a young married couple in the great City of Chicago.

First Doctor’s Appointment

Monday, 10 December 2007 Jacob Tomaw

Jonah went to the doctor today for his 1st week checkup. He is 8lb 1oz (8.0625lb, 129oz), 20.5in, and his head is 36.25cm around now. That makes him a pretty middle of the road baby compared to others. Except for his weight for length ratio, that is between the 5th and 10th percentiles. No concerns though. Doctors continue to be amazed with how well Jonah and Joscelynn are doing.

We were keeping detailed records of feeding and diapers, but Dr. Chang did not seem to concerned with counts so we are not any more. Just need to get him up to birth weight by his visit next week. That should not be a problem as he is expected to gain half to a full ounce every day.

Also, you can find more pictures in this set.

Joscelynn traverses Theatre de l’Europe

Saturday, 9 June 2007 Jacob Tomaw

This is the sidewalk along Theatre de l’Europe on the way to Jardin du Luxembourg. It was beautiful in October and imagine is it amazing on a warm, sunny spring day.

I think I want a print of this one for our walls.

Some people really don’t like the idea of working!

Bastille Circle, originally uploaded by flatiron32.

Above is a picture of Place de la Bastille, where angry little socialists have been showing how they value personal property rights for the last two nights. This demonstration comes on the heels of Nicolas Sarkozy being elected the 23rd President of the Republic of France (8th of the Fifth). Sarkozy want to unleash the economic power that France has displayed in the past by removing some of the social safety net and labor laws. You might call it Americanization.

I am sure I disagree with almost everything Socialist Party chief Francois Hollande wants politically, but he said something very important about our (France’s and that of these United States) form of government, i.e. the republic.

“We are in a republic, where universal suffrage is the only law we know. There can be disappointment, there can be anger, there can be frustration. But the only way to react is to take up your ballots, not other weapons.”

We among the few states where sovereign individuals have been able to choose their form of Government. Generally we are proud of the fact that power transfers peacfully in our republics, I think education is part of Sarkozy’s plan also.

The power of the data

Thursday, 29 March 2007 Jacob Tomaw

When you take a picture with your digital camera. a lot of information is saved in the file. One bit of information is the type of camera. Now imagine millions (is it millions?) of people uploading images to a central place. It would be pretty easy to find out what the most popular camera is.

Flickr is part of the amazing world we live in today and they have the data. Check out Flickr: Camera Finder.

My 7-year old! Sony DSC-S50 is not listed among it’s brothers. I wonder if I am the old person still using this camera. Maybe I will have to see what the more popular SLRs are in a couple months for my birthday.

Arc de Triomphe

Arc de Triomphe, originally uploaded by flatiron32.

A lot of my pictures in flickr have only basic tags and no title. The last week or so I have been titling and tagging a few each day. Today I noticed that I have not titled any relating to our Honeymoon in a while.

This is unusual because almost none of them have titles and I have been working through the most popular pics list. The flickr popularity algorithm is not straight forward, but it seems like this picture of the Arc de Triomphe should be highr rated than a picture of my Grandpa opening gifts this Christmas.

I know I am not a great photographer and I love my Grandpa, but it is the most buetifal city on earth!  It is Paris people!

Hemming at the new Table

Hemming at the new Table, originally uploaded by flatiron32.

We bought some new furniture last Saturday. Our new table, buffet, and end table were delivered on Wednesday. We bought them from Urbanest in Andersonville. We highly recommend them. Much better than Domicile, which is still holding our couch hostage.

You will notice although we have our new table, we still have the old chairs. If you would like to help with new chairs send checks or money orders to ….

We usually don’t eat at the table. However, Jos is using the new table as a sewing table to hem up our curtains she made a few weeks ago.

Here is another shot that makes me thing, “Damn, that looks swell.” I usually take weather in stride; however, I am going to be quite pleased when I can step out with just a long sleeve shirt on a regular basis.

1st March!
I am ready for spring to start. This shot from the Missouri Botanical Garden last year gives me hope that the world will soon be returning to full and living color.
